Alex: Yeah, you know, just talking about old times-- you know, how we set up the club, me, Kate, and Annie and the craic we used to have.

Suddenly, the first time I saw Kate's face the way it was-- smiling, happy, my beautiful Kate.
Relief indicates a sense of being released from something.
Can you say what that might have been?
Oh, yeah, absolutely, I mean, guilt, sadness... the feeling that I'm not allowed to be happy, and yet, when I saw Kate's face again, happy, smiling, made me think, you know, maybe it's all right for me to be happy, too.
Remembering Kate as you knew her pre-trauma is an important step in the healing process.
Right.
Well-- Right, so I'm getting better, am I?

Darren: Paramedics pronounced Ross Enderby dead at the scene at 0416 A.M. Where's Wendy?
She's gone back to the lab to start running tests.
Did she give a cause of death?
Yeah, a blunt-force trauma to the back of the head resulting in a traumatic brain injury.
There's evidence of blood on the coffee table there, and, given the state of the kitchen, there seems to be some sort of struggle.
Evidence suggests the victim slipped, lost his balance, and fell backwards, a fracture in the base of his skull.
And who found him?
Jean Dixon.
She'd been over seeing Molly.
Right.
Where is she now?
She's in the living room, but she's still in shock.
Right.
Carol: Is there anyone you can think of who might want to do him harm?
No, unless it was someone from his past maybe.
There was no sign of the door being forced, suggesting that Ross knew his killer.
Well, we don't lock doors out here.
I mean, whoever it was, they could have just walked straight in.
I don't think they were coming for him.
I think--I think they were coming for me.
Because of the threat left on your car?
Ross told me not to get involved.
And so when you went to see Molly, did you notice anything suspicious or-- No.
I don't-- I don't know.
I can't...remember.
I just haven't slept enough.
I'm so sorry.

Ohh... Jean, don't worry.

[Door opens] Wendy: As you can see, the victim suffered a severe fracture to the base of his skull on impact, resulting in catastrophic intracerebral hemorrhage, and I can confirm that the blood found on the coffee table is a match.
Was there any physical evidence of the intruder?
Not as yet, but we are still processing other samples taken at the scene.
However, we did find this.
It was concealed under the kitchen island.
There's evidence of blood on the blade.
Was the victim stabbed?
No.
Whose blood is it?
Well, as soon as we get all the results back, I'll let you know.

David Hadderly's car was seen on Hester Moor Road last night, 11:58 P.M., half a mile away from Jean Dixon's house.
Right.
Where is he now?
He's on the way to the station.
His daughter persuaded him to come in voluntarily.

Alex: No.
We just want to ask you a few questions, that's all.
Carol: What were you doing up on the moors last night?
I drive around when I can't sleep.
Is that a crime now?
One of our cameras places you around 15 miles from your house just before midnight.
What's this about?
Does the name Ross Enderby mean anything to you?

Who's that?
Jean Dixon's partner, who was murdered last night at her home, which is in the vicinity of your little joyride, and Jean thinks that the killer might have been coming for her.
Where were you between 11:00 and 2 A.M.?
Driving.
I told you.
I'd had too much to drink, nearly went off the road, realized I wasn't in control, so I pulled over.
When I started sobering up, I drove to Andy's to sleep it off.
Yeah.
Well, we'll get that checked out.
Take a look at this.
♪ That's Jean Dixon's car, and that's someone leaving a threatening note on her windscreen.
We think that might be you.
Well, it's not me.
I never threatened her.
Well, we know that's not true because we witnessed you threatening her to her face.
I wanted her to stay away from my family because, yeah, I was angry, but I never left any notes or went anywhere near her.
That wasn't me.
♪ Carol: David Hadderly has no alibi for the time of the murder.
We only have his word that he didn't send those texts, so we're working on the theory that the two cases are possibly linked.
Linked how?
He openly resented Jean Dixon.
He asked his daughter to lie for him.
Did he ask his brother to do the same?
Let's find that out.
Darren: We've got officers searching the property now.
Alex: If David Hadderly is guilty, that lends credence to Jean's theory that she was the target.
Ross Enderby just got in the way.
If that's the case, that means she's still at risk.
Carol: We've got surveillance at the house.
Good.
Well, she's been through enough.
Keep me updated.
Alex: Well, there's something bothering me about this Ross Enderby since the first time I met him.
He was so overprotective of Jean, and she was really wary of him.
Carol: Yeah.
It doesn't seem like Jean.
Exactly.
I mean, she was even knocking back his calls.
When I asked her about it, she just brushed it off.
Let's do some background checks.

Carol: See if you can find the... Alex: Yes.
Go ahead.
Carol: and cross-reference it with the team at the house.

So that's the Reserves Office confirming that there was a Sergeant Hadderly at the camp on the night we think that Kathy was murdered.
So what now?
Carol: We need to meet his brother Andy, so let's just park it until we find out a bit more about David's little late-night visit.
OK. ♪ Andy: Sam called me, said David was drunk... spiraling into one of his rages.
I told her to go to her friends', I'd deal with it, but I couldn't stop him.
What do you mean, stop him?
David felt victimized by Jean Dixon, wanted to have it out with her.
I have no idea what went on... but he was in a terrible state when he got to ours, told me he was sorry.
I asked him what he meant, but he refused to answer.
Carol: Well, it seems like he's been protecting him all along.
Yeah, but do we have enough evidence to charge David?
Well, we might do now.
Uniform found Kathy Hadderly's missing earring in David's toolbox.
About time we had a bit of luck.
[Cell phone rings] Yes?
Uh-huh.
Sure.
OK. Well, we'll be heading back.
♪ Lynne: She was beautiful, wasn't she?
Men were always drawn to her.
♪ Alex: No.
Don't you mean Sergeant David Hadderly?
Huh?
Are you sure?
Yeah.

What's going on?
I'll tell you when we're in the car.
Can you tell us about this crest, please, Mrs. Hadderly?
It's the regimental badge for the Royal Gryphon Guards.
You see, there was a training camp in the fields adjoining Horsley Wood the night that Kathy was murdered, and we have had it confirmed that Corporal David Hadderly did not attend, but Sergeant Andrew Hadderly did.
Carol: Your husband was billeted 10 minutes' walk from the crime scene.
Had you ever had any suspicions about Andy and Kathy having an affair?
♪ I always knew Andy saw other women.
♪ Sometimes I'd look for evidence, find things.
♪ It made me feel more in control somehow, like it was my choice to stay.
I didn't want to end up on me own, so I just shut out.
When I watched the appeal, I knew I'd seen that earring before-- not on Kathy, hidden in the pocket of Andy's cammo jacket.
That's when I knew he must have been there the night she-- The night she was murdered.
Yeah.
♪ He kept his old kit in the garage.
As soon as I got home, I went to find it, but it wasn't there.
Last night, I saw Andy burning leaves in the garden incinerator, thought it was odd.
He never did anything like that.
♪ Found this... ♪ buried in the ashes.
What, exactly, are you trying to tell us, Lynne?
That my husband planted that earring to make David, look guilty.
this phone has something to do with Kathy's death, That he was doing everything in his power to get rid of the evidence.
Andy: To be addressed in the next meeting of the subcommittee.
Carol: Andrew Hadderly, I'm arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Katharine Hadderly.
You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defense if you do not mention when questioned something that you later rely on in court.

This is ridiculous.
[Police radio chatter] This way, please.
[People murmuring] Carol: Can you tell us about the nature of your relationship with Kathy Hadderly?
We we're friends, always got on well.
I felt sorry for her.
Previously, you stated that Kathy was known to have relationships with other men.
Did that include you, Mr. Hadderly?
You do not have to answer that.
My lawyer is advising me to say, "No comment," but I'll answer your questions, as I have nothing to hide, and, no, that did not involve me.
Carol: Your wife seems to think differently.
♪ Do you recognize it?
♪ No.
I do not.
Alex: The same earring was found this morning in David Hadderly's property.
Did you put it there?
Of course not.
Records show that you attended a Reservist training camp in the fields adjoining Horsley Wood on the night that Kathy went missing.
Now, why have you not told us that before?
Because I saw her live two days later.
I didn't think it was relevant.
Carol: Oh, right, because a witness can place you walking back alone from the direction of the woods around 3 A.M. That was the last time you saw Kathy alive, wasn't it-- at the hollow tree, not outside the council offices.
And the car and the man that you saw her getting into the car with, they were never found because--guess what-- ha!--they didn't exist, did they?
[Cell phone vibrates] Let's take a break there.
Darren: So Tech managed to retrieve data from the burnt mobile phone, only has text messages to one number.
Sam Hadderly.
Oh, that's a low blow, using your own niece to cover your tracks.
Alex: He won't be able to wheedle his way out of this one.
Good work, Darren.

There's some very interesting texts on this, all of them calculated to make Sam Hadderly believe that her mother is still alive.

Now, you're a very clever man, Mr. Hadderly.
Can you tell us why you haven't disposed of this phone until now, hmm?

Carol: It's because you needed the number to stay the same, isn't it, so that Sam would keep believing your lies.
But if her mother's body was ever discovered, you knew that Sam would tell us about the texts, which you then used to implicate your own brother and make him appear guilty.
But it was you, wasn't it?
♪ Mr. Hadderly, I need you to answer the question.
♪ I loved Kathy... ♪ so much.
I need you to understand that.
♪ I--I couldn't lose her.
I just couldn't.
♪ Why did you think you were losing her?
♪ We'd been talking about a future... ♪ making a life together.
♪ So when she-- she asked to meet me at the hollow tree, I wasn't expecting her to end it.
Alex: Ah, right, so you met her there before.
♪ Yeah.
Carol: Did she say why she was ending it?
♪ She wanted to make a new life... ♪ for her and Sam... ♪ somewhere no one would find them.
♪ I wouldn't be part of it.
♪ I couldn't accept that.
♪ So what did you do?
♪ I begged her.
I begged her to change her mind... [Sniffles] told--told her I'd leave Lynne, I'd do anything she wanted... ♪ but she wouldn't-- she wouldn't listen.
I got... frustrated, angry.
She started screaming.
♪ I had to make her stop.

♪ Next minute-- ♪ Next minute...
I had my hands round her neck... ♪ and I kept them there till she stopped struggling... ♪ and by then, it was too late.
♪ So, what, you set about covering your tracks?
♪ Dave is my brother.
I killed his wife.
What was I supposed to do?
You walked back into that camp as if nothing had ever happened.
You invented a story about Kathy and some bloke barely two days after you shoved a rope down her throat and interred her lifeless body into the hollow of a tree.
Why keep the earring?
It's all I had left of her.

You knew Jean Dixon was back asking questions, didn't you?
You knew she was pushing for a result this time, and you had to stop her.
Is that right?
No.
That's not-- that's not right.
Alex: Yes.
No.
You put threatening letters on her car.
You followed her to her house, but she wasn't there, was she, but her partner was there.
And you didn't mean to kill him, either.
This--No.
This--this is the truth now.
I didn't-- I didn't leave any threatening messages, go anywhere near Jean Dixon or her house.
That wasn't me.
Alex: No?
Andy: That wasn't me.
♪ David: He used me.
He was prepared to let me take the blame.
♪ He's a good liar.
I'll give him that.
♪ Sam, your mum told him that she was leaving to find a better life for you both.
She never intended to abandon you, but he couldn't let her go.
[Sobs] [Sniffles] It's gonna be OK, Dad.
We're gonna be OK. [Sniffles] ♪ I always thought it was David because that's what Andy wanted, and I should have seen through him.
No.
I mean, I believe he was coming over to confront you, but Ross got in his way.
I mean, how did he get your address?
How did he get your-- I mean, did you give it to his wife at the time, you know, for Sam?
It's possible.
I don't know, can't remember.
I should have known it was Andy, and I have let everyone down.
No, Jean.

Don't do that.

At what cost to that family?
[Sniffles] Alex: Jean's still pretty traumatized, you know?
I suppose Andy Hadderly being guilty has left her feeling more responsible.
How did David and Sam Hadderly take the news?
They seemed pretty devastated but--I don't know-- somehow seemed closer.
At least they have some sort of closure now.
Boss?
Yeah?
An ex-colleague of Ross Enderby's in reception.
She wants to talk, a Rebecca Haleton, claims she filed a complaint against him.
What for?
Serial abuse.
Carol: So tell us about how you first met Ross Enderby.
We met at work.
Me mother had just died.
I was at a low ebb.
He was kind at first, told me that me mum would want me to be happy, that he'd take care of me, and I believed him... but as soon as he moved in, it started.
What started?
Ross called me the pig... ♪ said I was fat, ugly... ♪ that I was lucky to have him because no one else would want me.
♪ When I finally got the nerve to tell him to leave, that's when he got violent.
Alex: But you did eventually make a complaint against him, didn't you?
♪ A colleague noticed the bruising on me arms.
She encouraged me to go to me boss.
What happened?
♪ Senior officers said that they could make it go away if he agreed to take early retirement.
♪ That's when he moved up here.
Yeah.
They buried it.
Turns out, I was just one of many.
No one stopped him.
Carol: Was Jean living with similar abuse and just lying about it?
I knew she was hiding something, you know, but it's Jean.
I could never have imagined it was this.
No.
Enderby's car was pinged on the ANPR close to the street where Jean's car was parked.
So it was him in the security footage.
Right, so Ross put that note on the screen to scare Jean into pulling out of the investigation.
So he was back in control.
Which kind of pushes Andy Hadderly out of the frame.
Mm.
We need to talk to Jean.
Carol: Thanks for seeing us.
Yeah.
Take a seat.
So one of Ross' old colleagues came to see us.
And also a former girlfriend.
She claims that Ross was a serial abuser of women.
Did he ever mention his ex?
No.
He just said that, um... you know, the past hadn't been kind to either of us, and that it was all about the future.
So the abuse that this woman suffered, that was not your experience.
No.
No, not at all.
[Door closes] Darren: Sorry.
Can I have a word, please?
Carol: Yeah.
Just excuse us for a minute, please.
Look.
Tech got some interesting data on Ross Enderby's phone.
He put a tracker on Jean Dixon's car.
And what does it give us?
Well, Jean claimed she went to go and see Molly last night, nearly 5 miles away, but the tracker places her car on the drive all last night.
♪ Oh.
♪ [Door opens] [Sniffles] [Clears throat] [Door closes] Were you aware that Ross put a tracker on your car?
♪ No.
You told us that you drove to see Molly last night, but the data tells us that your car remained here.
♪ Alex: So if you didn't drive, how did you get there?
♪ Answer the question, Jean.
♪ There was no intruder, was there?
♪ No.
It was me.
I killed Ross.
♪ [Whirs] ♪ [Camera shutter clicks] ♪ [Slam] ♪ [Door opens and closes] You shouldn't be here.
Molly's arrived.
I thought you should know.
Can I see her?
No, not till after your interview.
Why'd you lie to me, Jean?
Well, I've known you for over 20 years.
We were friends.
I'm on your side.
[Door opens] I'm ready.
Jean: Ross had been getting increasingly... Carol: Controlling?
Obsessive, and he'd been following me.
He knew I'd been lying to him.
Lying about what?
He didn't want me to get involved in the Hadderly case... but when Sam said she'd only speak to me, I remembered that vulnerable 13-year-old girl who had trusted me to find her mum, and I felt that I let her down.
♪ I couldn't say no.
So you kept it from Ross.
Why?
Because he said our policing days were over and that it was just him and me now... ♪ and I knew it would upset him if I went against that.
Upset?
How?
♪ Because he didn't like me disagreeing with him, so it just seemed easier to say nothing.
I would talk to Sam, that would be the end of it, and he would never know... ♪ and then the old detective in me kicked in, and I couldn't stay away.
♪ What happened then?
♪ Well, he'd been following me... said he-- he wanted to see if I could be trusted and that I hadn't passed the test, and I could see that he was enjoying humiliating me, so I asked him, um, to leave, and he forced me out of my house.
Where did you go?
Up to Folly Ridge, which is where I go when I need to think.
So what happened then, when you came back?
♪ He said he was sorry... ♪ that he'd been drinking.
He was full of self-pity.
♪ He tried to kiss me, and I said that I had made my decision and that I wanted him out... ♪ and he said he'd kill me before he let that happen... ♪ and he just went for me, and I thought, "I'm not gonna die"... ♪ and somehow... um...
I found the strength to push him off... ♪ and he lost his balance, and he fell backwards, and he, um, hit his head on the coffee table... ♪ and that was it.
Alex: That knife that was found at the crime scene, did we ever find out whose blood was on the blade?
Not yet.
Right.
You see, if Ross did pull a knife on her, she'd be much better placed to argue self-defense.
She hasn't mentioned it.
No.
Let's show her it, see what she says.
I didn't mean to kill him.
Can we just stop this now?
Carol: OK, so you pushed Ross backwards.
He lost his balance, fell, hitting his head on the coffee table.
Yes.
And there were no weapons involved.
You're sure about that?
Yes, I am sure.
[Bag rustles] Do you recognize this?
♪ It's one of our knives.
♪ Found under the kitchen island.
♪ Now, why would one of your knives have blood on it?
♪ Wendy, I need the blood results for Ross Enderby.
They're only just in.
I was about to send you...
The blood on the knife, it isn't Jean Dixon's, is it?
Correct.

♪ Jean Dixon didn't mention the knife because Jean didn't know it was there.
She wasn't at the scene when Ross Enderby died.
Molly was.
It's her DNA on the knife.
Call her mobile.
[Beep beep] Molly, on phone: Thank you for calling.
She's not answering.
OK. Circulate the details with all patrols, now.
♪ [Tires screech] ♪ Molly.
♪ You know why I'm here, don't you?
I'm glad he's dead.
Oh, Molly, you shouldn't say that.
You really mustn't say that.
Just tell me what happened.
He seemed perfect at first, lovely to Mum and me, funny, charming, said all the right things.
He knew he was onto a cushy number with Mum-- nice house, nice pension, didn't want me spoiling his chances, so he started telling her lies about me.
And he knew she was vulnerable, yeah?
First red flag was him asking her for money, so I started looking him up online, found out he was seeing other women.
♪ Molly, voice-over: He'd left his phone in the bathroom.
I'd been watching him log in.
I worked out his password, but he always had it on him.
He was on all these apps, talking to women, arranging to meet them.
♪ I set up a profile with a photo I knew he'd go for, called myself Mia, and waited.
♪ Didn't take long for him to take the bait.
We chatted, and he asked to meet me for some adult fun, so I went up to the house... ♪ parked down the lane so no one could hear me, saw Ross at the window, assumed Mum was there because her car was in the drive.
♪ Felt so powerful.
I knew I had him and there was nothing he could do about it.
Hey, Ross, I'm Mia.
[Chuckles] Give me the phone.
Give me the phone.
[Lock clicks] [Panting] [Crash] Ross: Oh, ho, you stupid, little bitch.
♪ I've got copies.
Can't lie your way out of it this time.
Where's Mum?
She'll want to see this.
[Grunting] Oh!

[Breathing shakily] ♪ I didn't know what to do.
This wasn't how it was supposed to be.
I couldn't find Mum in the house, so I phoned her.
♪ Ross?

Mum... Ross.
