It comes after a former student at Cornell University filed a lawsuit last month alleging that she was gang raped in a fraternity house in 2024. since then, 2 recent reports of assault at fraternity houses near the University of Chicago have also gained national attention.
These cases are sparking conversations about whether universities should be doing more to prevent assault.
Joining us to talk more about this is LSU Mocker Loyola University.
Chicago and reporter for Loyola Student newspaper, the Loyola Phoenix and Ella Fast.
A student organizer at the University of Chicago in Griffin Halsted.
Also student organizer at the University of Chicago.
Now we'll we also received statements from both universities, which you can read that on our website.
Thank you both for joining us.
We have to Ellis, I'm going to start with left.
What is it like on a new Chicago's campus right now?
Describe what it's like.
>> Yeah, well first, thank you for having After these 2 most recent cases came to light.
I think that the conversations around assault on the Chicago campus and across campuses across the country.
definitely hind among certain individuals or so some activism that is coming to the forefront.
We have rally that is happening on this Wednesday.
Wednesday.
The 28th at 06:00PM on the man caught beyond that.
There's also other individuals and other groups organizing and putting posters up around campus that not been there previously.
So there's definitely a heightened response calling for the systemic state is systemic change within condo community and its administration.
>> And an elephant, I want to ask a follow-up question.
Know where these alleged incident shocking or unexpected?
>> Well, I will that they were so much talking and fact that it's always shocking.
Want to have something happens on your campus.
But at the same time, this is reality that isn't The case is at.
Kerr now Dallas.
You any Chicago are not something that's new.
It is just getting more night notoriety in this particular social moment.
there is some surprise, but also this is not a new phenomenon.
so I'm not especially and surprised that this came to light.
>> want to bring LSU marker now lately allows university most recent clergy reports show sees 6 cases of rape in 2025.
The all recorded since 2019 how did students react to the >> There is a ton of information.
Students really know how to read from the clerk poor.
So I think that when students figured out how to read the clear port and how to intake this information, it was shocking like Ellis said about him.
It's the back like the backdrop of the court.
No case.
I think especially it was shocking for students to see that on our own campus.
These incidents are occurring oil is often seen as a safer Campos in a safer space.
I think that it really took out aspect of a little away for some students.
And Griffin, despite only recently gaining national attention, assault isn't a new issue at Uchicago.
Do you think the university is doing enough?
>> I do not think that they're doing enough.
And that's part of why rally for the speech.
I actually first became aware of how to cut the other just the first game the final I went and did some digging and found the official disciplinary records for the university and saw numerous cases just in the past 5 years.
The university binding students responsible for assault and harassment and allowing them to stay on campus spending number toward amount of time, even in some cases suspending them allowing them back on campus finding the same students responsible for staff again, when I found this out, I started making fires putting records out into the university and posting them everywhere because I think that even though these records are publicly available, people don't know about them.
And so I think that the university absolutely need to see more and more people to be calling for change.
>> And Ella f, you know, how do you think universities can work to make this process easier for survivors?
>> You know, I think there's things both sides on the prevention side and on the accountability side that are not happening within the title 9 process.
It kind of in the aftermath.
It's a very secretive process.
survivors are really given a lot of support, proper process, whether it not having a support person during hearings are not being allowed to have a support providers that's the why do you think the I think there's a lack of there's a lack of Sharon see that feels like from the university.
I kind of striving by the university to avoid a kind avoid liability as as an entity that is an institution.
They want to avoid kind of liability in these issues and what could arise after it.
As we've seen in multiple criminal and civil lawsuits after the fact.
So I think whether it's things like lack of support systems, lack of training for people during the hearings for us.
There's a lot on the entire police said that needs to be changed to protect students both before and after an event occurs.
>> And LSU cover the recent protest on Loyola's campus for the school newspaper.
Can you tell me what was that like and what did you hear from students?
>> From the students, I heard range outrage over the university's lack of accountability and transparency.
And I heard a plea for students for the university to show that they care for the victims affected and not just for their image.
I heard students wanting to feel that Loyola cares to protect the women, especially that have been affected by the recent allegations.
And just 2 make students feel more that they have a safe space report on campus.
And as the university is going to protect them and care for their well being and not just to care, 4 resulting issues but to actually help with the issues.
Underlying to that scene at the students are asking for accountability from the university.
What does that look like?
The students are asking for accountability from the university and just transparency and students at the protests felt that they didn't know what was really going on and they wanted the university to reach out to students and to let us know what they're doing to help resolve these issues and to help actually change the culture on campus or owning assault and misconduct rather than just how they're trying to resolve these specific cases.
>> And Griffin, the recent cases at Cornell, you, Chicago took place at various fraternity houses on or near campus is.
Do you think there is a need for a broader conversation involving rules and regulations for Greek life?
>> Yes, absolutely.
I think obviously many things thought, you know, happened paternity many of them do, including the 2 most recent cases you to Colorado.
And the interesting thing about our specific university relationship return a tease is that they are not technically affiliated with the school.
This means that the school does not have liability for incidents.
That may happen at the fraternities that associate with Chicago but not technically incorporated or sanctioned by the school, even though they are on South University at the air.
Right by the center of our campus.
And they are a big part of our social The university does not actually take ownership of regulating the things that go on there.
And I think that they should absolutely reexamined their relationship to the fraternity is if they're going to continue existing >> And we only have time for one last question.
Lso, want to go to you.
How do you think the national attention has impacted these cases?
>> I think that national attention has made these issues feel more personal because people are able to access more information and more details and what is going on is something that everyone on any college campus or people who are on college campuses are able to educate themselves on and see the effects of a little bit more immediately than in the past even before the last month when the court no cases I think nationally attention also can put a little more pressure on universities, especially when university seem to sometimes want to protect their image over their students.
I think national attention can bring more pressure to them and hopefully can helps them too, realize
