-Good evening, Austin.
[ Cheers and applause ] My name is Adia Victoria.
This is my band.
We done come all the way from Nashville, Tennessee, to play these blues for you.
Now, this first song is a song off my new record, "A Southern Gothic."
It's about a girl from South Carolina that runs away from home too far, too fast.
It's called "Far From Dixie."

-Yeah!
-Whoo!
-Now, for the past two years, I've been sitting in quarantine at my mama, Miss Jackie's house in North Nashville.
And I've been looking out my window, thinking about... "What am I gonna write about?"
And the only thing that I could see from my window was my magnolia tree.
And I started thinking about my girlhood in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where I grew up underneath its leaves and its limbs.
And I started thinking about the way, as a little girl, I would create entire worlds.
So I wrote a song for my tree, my magnolia tree.
This song is called "Magnolia Blues."

People ask me why I always sing about the South.
And by "people," I mean my mother.
She's like, "Another song about the South, Adia?"
[ Laughter ] But being a Southerner, it's a strange thing.
You ponder about it.
You gnaw on it.
But you never can quite get to the heart of the South.
And I remember Eudora Welty, she said that the thing about a Southern writer that makes a good Southern writer is you can see the most mundane things and see the extraordinary in the everyday.
And that's what I tried to do with this next song.
I looked at the South around me.
I looked at the kudzu and the red clay.
And I decided to write a eulogy using nature around me.
This song is called "My Oh My," and I dedicate it to my two little sisters, Hanifa and Hope.

[ Laughter ] And there was one morning in March of 2020.
I was driving our little white van to work.
Clock in for a shift, and all of a sudden, my whole body got stiff.
I seized up with anxiety.
Because there was this new virus, the coronavirus, and apparently, y'all, you could pass it along and kill somebody just by breathing on them wrong.
And I was terrified, 'cause I live with my mama, Miss Jackie, and she old, like.
And I thought I might come home and kill her with my breath.
And I pulled that van over to the side of the road, and I stopped.
[ Mid-tempo introduction playing ] And I remembered all the blueswomen from the Deep South that came before me.
I'm talking women like Ma Rainey.
I'm talking women like Sister Rosetta Tharpe and, uh, Betsy Davis and Victoria Spivey.
And they said, "Adia, as long as you have breath in your chest, baby girl, yes, you are alive.
And as long as you are alive, you owe it to celebrate that life.

And I wrote it following the lynching of George Floyd and the passing of Representative John Lewis.
And I remember sitting in that Southern heat, and I was thinking about John Lewis's words -- you know, his phrase.
He would tell us to get into good trouble.
And he was talking to young folks especially.
And so I wanted to get into good trouble and tell my truth to power.
And this song, I dedicate to every single person that tells me to shut up and sing and every person that tells me that if I don't love the South, then to leave.
And to all those people, I say I love the South, and I ain't leaving.
My family's been here for 400 years.
