About Season 2
MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient and multiple Grammy winner Rhiannon Giddens hosts a half-hour series of musical performances and conversations with outstanding guest artists filmed on location.
Season 2 focuses on Rhiannon’s work with Silkroad Ensemble as the groundbreaking musical group embarks on “American Railroad,” her flagship program as its artistic director.
One of the most important technological and economic achievements of the 19th century, the transcontinental railroad helped shape our cultural identity. Yet the work of the diverse immigrant groups and former slaves who actually built the railroad has not been duly celebrated.
Each episode of Season 2 features a master musician representing one of those cultures. They play solo pieces as well as duets with Rhiannon, talk about their personal backgrounds and musical journeys, and reveal the common ground of music’s global roots.
Episodes typically finish with an excerpt from Silkroad Ensemble’s “American Railroad” concert at UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall. Featured artists are pipa master Wu Man, Celtic harpist Maeve Gilchrist, violinist and improvisational conductor Mazz Swift, tabla virtuoso Sandeep Das, Japanese percussionist Haruka Fujii, and Native American vocalist and lap steel player Pura Fé.
